Military Leave - Annual Reservist Training

1.0 POLICY

T

he City of Greensboro provides time off for annual reservist training for all employees.

Benefit eligible employees receive paid leave as specified in this policy. Other (not benefit

eligible) employees receive unpaid time off.

2.0 PURPOSE

T

he City supports employees wishing to serve their country through participation in the

military services as a reservist and has long provided benefit support to do so. The City

complies with the guidelines of the Uniform Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act

of 1994 (USERRA) and considers them minimum requirements. This policy explains how the City

fulfills its obligations under USERRA for employees who are serving on active duty in the military

for their annual reservist training and the additional benefits the City provides in some cases.

3.0 SCOPE

This policy applies to employees in all benefit eligible positions. Other (not benefit eligible employees are not

covered by the leave in this policy but will be allowed time off.

4.0 DEFINITIONS

4.1

Active Duty for annual reservist training

- off not to exceed the total number of

scheduled work hours necessary for an employee to fulfill his annual reservist training

obligation with the military during the 12 month period October 1 through September 30

(military fiscal year).

4.2

Paid Leave for Annual Reservist Training

- City paid leave granted for annual

reservist training for one-half the time of training up to two calendar weeks. For the

remainder of the training period, the employee may use his own accrued paid or unpaid leave.

City-paid leave is available on a calendar year basis from October 1 through September 30

(military fiscal year).

4.3

Benefit Eligible

- Full time and part time employees who are eligible for coverage and

participation in the City’s benefit programs in addition to legally mandated coverage.

4.4

Other (Not Benefit Eligible) Employee

- An employee assigned to a position designated

roster (RP), seasonal temporary (ST), or special project (SP) who is eligible for salary and

mandated benefits only.
