1.0 POLICY
S
moking is prohibited in City buildings, parking garages, decks, and in City vehicles.
2.0 PURPOSE
T
he purpose of this policy is to eliminate work place exposure to second-hand smoke for
employees and citizens and to comply with City of Greensboro Code of Ordinance adopted
8-21-0707-180 Chapter 10.
3.0 SCOPE
This policy applies to all City of Greensboro employees, contractors and private citizens in all City owned or
leased facilities and vehicles, except where superseded by City Ordinance or in the case of leased facilities,
where controlled by the building owner or a tenant committee.
4.0 DEFINITIONS
None
5.0 ORGANIZATIONAL RULES
5.1 Designated Outdoor Smoking Areas
A. All designated smoking areas are public and open to all who use the facility.
B. Designated outdoor smoking areas should be sensibly suitable for smoking so that second
hand smoke will not reasonably contact non smokers, create a fire hazard, or create a negative
appearance.
C. Any designated smoking area will have appropriate signage to identify its usage as well as
receptacles for smoking waste.
5.2 Private Offices - Smoking in a private office is prohibited.
5.3 Facilities - Smoking will be permitted only in designated outdoor areas of City owned or leased
facilities.
In facilities used by multiple departments, Facilities Management and the Safety and Health
Manager may recommend the designated areas subject to approval of the City Manager. No
designated facility shall violate the intent and purpose of the City Ordinance.
