T

his appendix is intended to establish safe procedures and protocols for employees that work

alone. It applies to all City employees that have potential to be injured due to hazardous work

activities or a victim of violent crime while working alone.

T

he City of Greensboro intends to provide a safe work environment for its employees

wherever they work. Due to the nature of the work City employees perform, they can be at

risk for violence or threats from the public at large. Employees can also be at risk due to hazardous

work activities such as work from heights or use of hazardous equipment. Many City employees

are required to carry out their job duties alone, which may limit the City’s ability to respond to

employees when emergencies arise. This appendix is intended to promote employee and manager

awareness of the hazards employees face as they are performing their assigned duties. It outlines

the hazard assessment process, the steps that can be taken to reduce the likelihood of a hazardous

event and procedures to provide assistance to lone workers in emergencies.

H

azardous work activities are work activities that may result in serious injury requiring

immediate medical attention. Some examples may include, but are not limited to, working

at heights, working with electricity, using hazardous equipment (chain saws, mowers) and using

hazardous chemicals.

W

orking alone is work that requires employees to conduct work either in public or in City

facilities where immediate assistance from co-workers is not available.

Potential Hazards

Some of the activities where the potential for injury or violence against a City employee is greater

includes, but is not limited to, the following:

• Collecting money in public alone (meter collections)

• Working alone in public areas (neighborhoods, streets and in private residences)

• Working in remote areas alone (parks, cemeteries, and water-shed properties)

• Conducting hazardous work alone (using chemicals, working at heights, and working

with electricity)

The following responsibilities have been identified to ensure employees are protected from the

hazards of working alone.
