Chapter Three

Using Timber

T

here are five basic steps that need

to be taken to prepare timber for

commercial use.

The first step is cutting down or

felling

the trees. In a forest, mature trees

are often picked ahead of time to be

harvested initially. This will leave the

younger trees behind to grow. New trees,

or

saplings

, will grow in the new spaces

created.

pulp:

the material made by

using chemicals to separate

the fibers in wood.

sapling:

a young tree; one

with a trunk that is less than

4 inches (10.16 centimeters)

in diameter.

seasoning:

the process

of drying lumber for use;

sometimes done in kilns.
