Daniel Craig’s fourth outing as
007 may lack the frantic pace and
emotional impact of predecessor
Skyfall
, but it’s a treat for
longtime Bond devotees, despite
featuring one of the most boring
theme songs in the series’
history, and an even worse title
sequence (involving a threesome
between Bond, a Bond girl, and
an octopus!).
Spectre
gets down
to business with a spectacular opening set during
Mexico’s Day of the Dead festival, and follows it up
with the return of an old nemesis and more revelations
regarding Bond’s recent misfortunes. Tarantino
favourite Christoph Waltz is the latest actor to lead the
eponymous organisation, and although his character’s
true identity was kept a secret, the appearance of a
white cat pretty much spills the beans. Additionally,
much was made of Monica Bellucci’s casting as a Bond
girl, but don’t expect to see her for more than a few
minutes. If this is indeed Daniel Craig’s swan song
as Bond – and watching
Spectre
, you sort of get the
feeling it is – it’s a fitting send off in the spirit of

SPECTRE
The Hunger Games
’ grand finale
brings the rebellion against the
tyrannical President Snow to his
doorstep, and this YA saga to an
immensely satisfying conclusion.
Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) and
her District 13 allies attempt
to infiltrate the Capitol to
assassinate the despot, allowing
the final chapter to pay tribute to
its roots – the gamemakers have
transformed the Capitol into a huge Hunger Games
arena full of lethal booby traps, including a tsunami of
black oil and a horde of savage albino sewer mutants.
Like its youthful protagonists,
The Hunger Games
series has matured with each installment, and the final
film is the most adult of them all. There’s no flinching
from the horrors of war here; the fight for freedom
and democracy for all of Panem results in massive
casualties on both sides, with many supporting
characters shockingly despatched with a
Game of
Thrones
-like ruthlessness. For those who haven’t
read the novel, be prepared for some nasty surprises.
And now you can watch both parts back-to-back for
maximum impact.
