THE MERIDIAN STAR
-
At Decatur, East Central head coach A.J. Kilpatrick is looking
forward
to
Saturday night's road trip to Booneville and Northeast
Junior College.
Kilpatrick watched his Warriors drop a heartbreaking 17-14 deci–
sion to South Division rival Gull Coast on a 28-yard field goal last
weekend. He said he thought his team played well.
"We knew Gulf Coast would be a good team," Kilpatrick said.
"But our boys are convinced we played a good game.
East Central, 1-1, hopes to incorporate a more powerful running
attack
to
complement an already-strong aerial game.
Against Gull Coast, quarterback Stacey Powell completed 11 of 23
passes for 173 yards and one TO. His 33-yard strike
to
tight end
David Gallaspy set up the Warriors' first score - a pass from
Gallaspy to running back Percy Johnson.
EC's other TD was a pass from Powell
to
Anthony Brown.
"We haven't had too much success running the ball," Kilpatrick
said. "We seem
to
move the ball much better with the pass. We've
worked on our sprint-out attack this week, but I hope our running
backs can get something going against Northeast. "
Halfback Charlie Triplett led the Warriors rushing last week with
just 34 yards. Teamwise, EC netted just 54 yards on the ground.
Kilpatrick, aware that Northeast has given up an average of 26
points per game this season, said "maybe we can get us some of_
those this week."
Defensively, Kilpatrick said middle linebacker Arthur McMillan
suffered a bruised neck against Gull Coast. He should be ready by
Saturday, however.
"They (Northeast) are very much in the same class as us,"
Kilpatrick said. "They aren't that strong. They have one good runn–
ing back that can hurt you. But they are no big offensive football
team."
Northeast is o-2 overall. Kickoff is set for 7:30p.m.
