FERN FAÇADE
by Sean Alward
Sean Alward’s frit pattern artwork for the expanded
Newton Recreation Centre is now complete! Inspired
by a grove of mature trees beside the facility, Alward’s
design uses a fern frond with a leaflet captured in each
pane of glass. The film strip reference, with cropped
images arranged in successive frames, acknowledges
the paradox of representing both continuity and flux
within the community. The ferns are resilient plants
in Newton, a place that has been urbanized yet is still
home to these ancient living species.
Join us for the unveiling and an artist talk on September 30.
