There

are

two

distinctive

varieties

of

wine

produced

in

CiiliCornia

that

have

won

considerable

popularity

throughout

the

land.

One

is

Zinfandel,

a

claret

type,

made

from

the

Zin-

fandel

grape,

which

is

supposed

to

be

of

Hungarian

origin,

but

on

account

of

the

carele.ss

marking

of

the

cuttings

when

they

were

first

imported

into

California

its

actual

derivation

is

un-

certain.

It

is

a

grape

that

bears

very

abundantly,

the

berries

being

small

and

very

closely

packed

together,

and

produces

an

agreeable

light

table

wine,

soft

and

smooth.

The

other

wine

to

which

I

refer

is,

Angelica,

a

favorite

with

women.

In

reality,

it

is

not

a

wine

at

all,

considering

that

"wine

is

the

fermented

juice of

the

grape"

as

it

is

made

by

mixing

about

one-third

(some

manufacturers

use

less)

brandy

with

two-thirds

grape

juice

fresh

from

the

press.
