oat racing originated in the 1700's in

England. It was in part due to

Thomas Doggett who offered a tro-

phy, the Doggett Coat and Badge, to the

winner of a race held on the River Thames.

Later, the regatta was incorporated into

the sporting events at many universities.

The first race took place in 1829 between

Oxford and Cambridge Universities. In the

United States, Harvard and Yale were the

first regatta competitors in 1852.

Since this time, universities all over the

U.S. have been in regatta competitions.

USD is no exception. The Men's Crew

team won the Cal Cup at the San Diego

Crew Classic and because of this, they were

invited to compete in the Copey Cup

against UCLA in the West and Harvard in

the East. The Women's team is equally as

spirited, dedicated, and apt to greatness.
