I
oat racing originated in the 1700's in
England. It was in part due to
Thomas Doggett who offered a tro-
phy, the Doggett Coat and Badge, to the
winner of a race held on the River Thames.
Later, the regatta was incorporated into
the sporting events at many universities.
The first race took place in 1829 between
Oxford and Cambridge Universities. In the
United States, Harvard and Yale were the
first regatta competitors in 1852.
Since this time, universities all over the
U.S. have been in regatta competitions.
USD is no exception. The Men's Crew
team won the Cal Cup at the San Diego
Crew Classic and because of this, they were
invited to compete in the Copey Cup
against UCLA in the West and Harvard in
the East. The Women's team is equally as
spirited, dedicated, and apt to greatness.
Congratulations to team captains
Todd
Miccio and Jennifer LeFere
for making
USD proud!
