LURE - THRU THE AGES
WODEYARS OF MYSORE 1573 - 1940 A.D.
Yaduraya was the first ruler mentioned
in the annals of the Mysore royal family.
Raja Wodeyar I (1578-1617) was the first
great ruler of the dynasty who ousted the
Vijayanagar governor at Seringapatam and
made it his capital. He and his successors
conquered neighbouring regions and ex-
panded the territory of the kingdom.
Chikkadevaraja
(1673-1704)
was
the
greatest among the early rulers of Mysore.
He secured several new areas including
Bangalore from the Mughals who had occu-
pied it. He founded the central Secretariat
with 18 departments known as Attara
Kacheri and erected a dam across the
Cauvery. During the rule of Krishnaraja
Wodeyar IV (1884-1940) Mysore saw all-
round progress and became known as the
Model State.
