Roam Through one of France’s Most Beautiful
Bastide Towns
This is undoubtedly the most perfect of Périgord’s bastide towns. Founded in
1284 for the Duke of Aquitaine and Edward I, King of England, Montpazier is laid
out in a rectangular grid pattern. As you wander from “Carryou”: main streets, to
“Andrones”: little lanes, both typical of the bastide village, you’ll admire the overall
harmony of this medieval design. A line of outstanding stone houses with gothic
arcades, encompass the main square
A
, heart and soul of the town. Standing on
sturdy chestnut wood pillars, theMarket Hall which dates back to the XIIIth century,
houses three medieval grain measures.
