Professor of Common Law

THE Council appointed Mr. Daniel J. O'Connor,

B.A., LL.B., Solicitor, as Professor of Common

Law to the Society in place of Mr. Matthew Pur-

cell, Solicitor, whose term of office has expired.

State Aid for Prisoners' Defence

THE Council considered a letter from a firm of

solicitors with reference to the remuneration

allowed to them by the State on assignment to

defend a prisoner accused of murder.

In the

opinion of the Council the remuneration in the

particular circumstances allowed to the solicitors

was entirely inadequate and it was decided to

make representations to the proper authorities.

SEANAD ELECTION

THE Council has elected Mr. John B. Hamill,

M.A., LL.B., of Ardronan, Dromiskin. Dundalk,

Co. Louth, President of the Society and Mr.

Eugene F. Collins of Messrs. Eugene F. Collins &

Son, 19 Eustace Street, Dublin, Chairman of the

" Leinster Leader " Co. as the Society's nominees

on the Cultural and Educational Panel of candi

dates for the Seanad under the provisions of the

Seanad (Panel Members) Electoral Act, 1937.
