legal profession one of its outstanding members. He was
eldest son of Dr. Thomas A. Neville, Clonakilty. The
deceased had a brilliant record from his student years.
Educated at Rockwell College, he became appren-
ticed to his late uncle, Mr. James Neville, solicitor,
Bandon, and in his final solicitor's examination, he was
awarded a silver medal, and the Findlater Scholarship.
In addition he obtained his B.A. at University College,
Cork, with first-class honours in economics and soci-
ology. He took an active interest in college life and was
honorary secretary of the Law Society. He was awarded
the Peel Memorial Prize.
His crowning schalostic achievement came when he
was awarded a scholarship granted by the Friendly Sons
of St. Patrick in Philadelphia, U.S.A.. which was granted
in open competition for students of all the Irish univer-
sities. He spent a year in the U.S.A. and secured his
LL.M.
On his return home, he did not immediately enter
the solicitor's profession, but instead he opted to practise
at the Bar, and having passed the necessary examin-
ations he was called to the Bar and rapidly built up a
valuable practice. He also became a lecturer under the
Incorporated Law Society.
In 1968, after recovering from an illness, he reverted
to his original profession of solicitor and joined the
well-known Cork legal firm of O'Flynn, O'Driscoll and
Russell and he became well-known and respected in
Cork legal circles. He also took up an appointment as
an assistant lecturer at the Law Department of U.C.C.
He continued to take an avid interest in legal science
outside of day-to-day practice and his distinguished
status was recognised when he was appointed to the
special legal research body which was set up in asso-
ciation with the Economic and Social Research Insti-
tute under the chairmanship of Mr.-Justice Kenny. He
was also chairman of the Society of Young Solicitors
and. in fact, presided at their seminar a few weeks ago
in Killarney.
Mr. Neville is survived by his wife Mrs. Finola Neville,
solicitor, and three children; his parents; his sister and
his brothers who are also members of the legal profession.
