MODERN MINING

April 2017

TLT ACTOM aims to offer South Africa’s

mining and power sector more than just

innovative ventilation fans. It says its cus-

tomised systems ensure that working

conditions are safe and energy efficiency

maximised as part of a holistic ‘Total

Ventilation Solution’ that aims to reduce

total cost of ownership.

Operations Director Craig Johnston

believes that TLT ACTOM’s approach is

ideal for addressing the concerns of the

Southern African market. “We have come

to realise that in Southern Africa power

is becoming a far higher input cost in our

industries and processes than it was in the

past,” he says.

“TLT ACTOM prides itself on applying

innovative, lateral thinking to solutions

that save energy by offering the best

efficiency selections for the applications.

We can supply products that are not only

Complete ventilation solution offered

more efficient in their performance but

are also tailored to deliver the required air

at the required time. For example, a fan

that is designed to have different degrees

of control in order to meet the specific

levels of ventilation required for increased

ambient temperature or activity or when

measured pollutants move beyond a pre-

set tolerance.”

TLT ACTOM’s Total Ventilation Solution

approach aims to provide complete solu-

tions to the challenges of underground

mines, thermal power plants and numer-

ous industrial process applications

including cement production and waste

incineration.

“Capital cost is one aspect that cli-

ents are most heavily focused on but TLT

ACTOM strives for excellence in power

efficiency, maintainability and life expec-

tancy – all factors that can easily outweigh

the initial purchase price. To do this, we

rely on superior technology derived from

our parent company TLT-Turbo,” Johnston

explains.

He elaborates with an example of

how innovation ensures that clients see a

return on investment. “As part of a recent

study, TLT ACTOM proposed to replace

two existing mine ventilation fans with

a single axial fan. Because of its higher

efficiency, it will save approximately

500 kW. The calculated annual energy

saving is R3,6 million, making the payback

extremely attractive.”

The current installed base of process

and ventilation fans is aging, and in tough

times this equipment has to be carefully

maintained to achieve the expected life

of product. To achieve this, TLT ACTOM

provides a dedicated skilled team of

fan specialists to monitor and maintain

installed systems.

“Where replacements are required, we

offer the value added service of critically

analysing the existing plant and using an

intellectual approach to offer improve-

ments, for example, in efficiency, size

correction or wear durability. Wherever

possible, this is achieved without replac-

ing the entire fan but in retrofitting the

rotating element with minor modifi-

cations, thus minimising the capital

spend for the customer and ensuring an

acceptable return on investment,” says

Johnston.

Multotec launches as a fully Botswanan company

After five years of successfully growing its

market in Botswana, mineral processing

solutions provider Multotec will now be

relaunching as a fully-fledged subsidiary –

locally registered and rooted in Botswana.

“With our head office in Letlhakane and

additional site offices at Jwaneng, Orapa

and Letlhakane diamond mines, Multotec’s

success in this region has been built on

staying close to our customers,” says Kris

Vergote, General Manager for Multotec

Botswana. “We are now also an active part

of the local community and have created

employment for 148 local residents.”

With 23 years of industry experience,

Vergote is supported by metallurgist

Kennedy Maputla in the role of Sales and

Contracts Manager; Allen Roussouw, the

company’s Field Services Manager, adds

his 20 years of operational plant experi-

ence to the capacity of the management

team.

According to Multotec Africa MD Jaco

du Toit, the company’s proximity to cus-

tomers allows high levels of technical

and maintenance backup. The Botswana

premises include 1 350 m

2

, 350 of these

under cover, dedicated to stockholding.

This effectively reduces lead times and

ensures that a customer is never kept

waiting for parts.

“Our personnel are at customers’ sites

on a daily basis, so there is always strong

technical expertise on the ground,” says

Du Toit. “While the metallurgists and plant

experts in the Letlhakane office manage

our maintenance contracts, they are, in

turn, supported by product specialists in

the Johannesburg head office, who visit

sites as and when required.”

Multotec Botswana also operates its

own fleet of vehicles which allows the

company optimum flexibility in terms of

customer deliveries.

In a significant development that

boosts local content, Multotec has built the

capacity of its Botswana office to conduct

light fabrication at the request of custom-

ers, rather than sending this work to South

Africa.

This kind of work, on screening media

products as well as wear-related and

peripheral products such as mill-feed

chutes, discharge chutes and pipes, can

now conveniently be done close to the

customer during a scheduled plant main-

tenance shutdown. Mine staff can also be

supported in the installation process.
