On Saturday 18 July
, The New
and Aspiring Speechies (NAAS) group
hosted a morning coffee catch-up at
Hopes & Beans café in Payneham.
We were lucky enough to have SPA
SA Branch Chair, Cathy Clark, present
on the Association's Professional
Self-Regulation (PSR) program. The
event was a great success with over
20 participants who were able to
better understand the requirements
for new graduates in transitioning from
‘provisional’ to ‘certified’ practising
speech pathologist. In addition to
enjoying yummy cakes and coffee
there were lots of great questions for
Cathy and small group discussion.
The NAAS events continue to be a
great forum for new learning, sharing
experiences and reconnecting with
peers with lots of laughter! The NAAS
group are meeting to plan the last
event for 2015 and would love
suggestions for topics that are important
to speech pathology students and
recent graduates. The NAAS committee
can be contacted through their
Facebook page.

On Wednesday 16
September
, The Northern
Adelaide Rehabilitation
Service (NARS) held an
education session and
afternoon tea at Modbury
Hospital, to promote National
Stroke Week 2015.
This event was run by the
NARS ‘StrokeBusters’ Stroke
Education Group, with the aim
to provide further education
to patients about stroke and
to provide the opportunity
for patients to share their
experiences of stroke.
Approximately 24 previous
and current NARS patients
who have experienced a
stroke, and subsequently
stroke rehabilitation in the
NARS Inpatient Rehabilitation,
Rehabilitation in the Home
(RITH) and Day Rehabilitation
services, attended this event
with their families and carers.
This event also coincided
with ‘Wednesday Without
Words’, which is National
Aphasia Awareness Day.
To promote National
Aphasia Awareness Day,
two Flinders University final
year Speech Pathology
students who are currently
completing their final clinical
placements at NARS
provided handouts to
attendees about aphasia,
and other communication
and swallowing disorders.
Many attendees at the event
had previously received
rehabilitation from the NARS
Speech Pathology team, and
generously provided valuable
advice and support to current
NARS patients.
Overall, the NARS Stroke
Week Afternoon Tea was
a successful event, with
attendees participating in
free health checks, collecting
educational resources,
listening to the journeys
of other people who have
experienced a stroke, and
most importantly enjoying
a healthy afternoon tea of
recipes approved by our
dietitian!
