Ecuador’s Ministry of Electricity and Renewable
Energy is looking for an engineering, procurement
and construction company to take on a hybrid
systemproject on Isabela island, in the Galapagos
Archipelago.
The project, with financial backing from
Germany-based KfW Bankengruppe, will
comprise a 1.1MW PV system, a 1.2MW thermal
power plant and a 1MW energy storage
system. It will supply energy to Isabela island,
the largest among the Galapagos islands.
South America has been identified as an
important emerging market for the solar
industry, but with one of the more developed
feed-in-tariffs in the area, Ecuador may
become a center for solar investment in the
coming years. It has already seen an increase
in development in the solar sector and in April,
Solaria Energía y Medio Ambiente announced
that it would develop a 25MW PV project in the
region.
