Extra-Ordinary Members.

The following, whose, names were sub–

mitted by the Incorporated Law Society of

Northern Ireland, were elected to serve as

Extra-Ordinary Members of the Council :

Mr. James C. Taylor (President), Mr. R.

Baillie, Mr. R.

J. Dickson, Mr.

J. B.

McCutcheon, and Mr. John G. H. \Vilson.

Courts of Justice Act.

The Council appointed

the President,

Mr. Bradley and Mr. Mayne to represent the

Council in conferring with three members of

the Bar Council in reference to legislation

arising out of the Report of the Joint Com–

mittee of the Oireachtas of 6th November,

1930.

OBITUARY.

SIR GEORGE ROCHE.

By the death of Sir George Roche, which

took place on the 25th of January, 1932, at

his residence, 76 Merrion Square, Dublin, the

Solicitors' profession in Ireland has been

deprived of a member who, during a long

life, took a deep interest in the welfare of

the profession and of this Society. Having

served his apprenticeship with his father,

Mr. William. Roche (President of this Society,

1876-77), Mr. George Roche was admitted in

Hilary Term, 1874. Following the death of

his brother, Mr. Thomas Knight Roche

(a member of the Council, 1886 to 1897, and

a Vice-President of the Society, 1893-4),

Mr. George Roche was, in 1898, elected a

member of the Council, and in December,

1900, he was elected a Vice-President, and

in the following March, upon the appoint–

ment of the late Mr. Goff (who was then

President) to be a Taxing Master, Mr. Roche

was elected President of

the Society.

In

the" month of June in-the following year the

honour of Knighthood was conferred upon

him by King Edward VII.

Sir George

retired from the Council in 1912, but his

work for the welfare of the profession did

not end then.

In 1920 he was elected

Chairman', of the Board of Directors of the

Solicitors' Benevolent Association, of which

Board he had been for many years a member,

and, to the great advantage of the Associa–

tion. He continued to actively occupy the

position-of Chairman until his death.

MR. JAMES E. O'DOHERTY, Solicitor, died

on the 2nd January, 1932, at his residence,

.." Milburn," Buncrana, Co. Donegal.

Mr. O'Doherty was admitted in Trinity

Term, 1871, and practised at Londonderry up

to 1915, when he retired.

MR. JOHN A. MCAREVEY, Solicitor, died on

the 18th January, 1932, at his residence,

" Glenshee," Foxrqck, Co. Dublin.

Mr. McArevey served his apprenticeship

with Mr. .Alexander Gartlan,. Newry ;

was

admitted

in Hilary Sittings,

1912,

and

practised at. 2S-27 StV'Andrew Street, Dublin.
