Acidulated
Alkali.
Grate
the
rind
of
a
couple
of
lemons
upon
four
ounces
of
castor
sugar,
pound
and
mix
it
with
two
ounces
of
tartaric
acid
and
the
same
quantum
of
bicarbonate
of
soda
;
bottle
and
cork
it
closely,
and
when
required
stir
a
teaspoonful
quickly
into
half
a
tumblerful
of
water
and
drink
during
efferves-
cence.
Arrow-Root
Gruel.
Take
a
dessertspoonful
of
arrow-root
and
mix
it
with
sufficient
cold
water
to
form
a
thin
paste
;
then
put
it
into
boiling
water
or
boiling
milk
and
add
salt,
sugar,
and
lemon
juice.
Barley
Water.
Put
one
large
tablespoonful
of
pearl
barley
into
two
quarts
of
cold
water
in
a
saucepan
and
bring
to
the
boil
;
squeeze
the
juice
of
two
good
lemons
into
a
jug
with
white
sugar
to
taste,
pour
upon
this
through
a
strainer
the
boiling
barley
water
and
let
it
stand
till
cold.
