INDEXDark fiber expansion
Zayo Group has unveiled plans to build
long-haul dark fiber up the eastern
seaboard,
further
expanding
the
company's intercity fiber buildout plans.
The new route will stretch 800 miles
between Atlanta and the Washington DC
metro areas, passing through Charlotte,
Raleigh, and Richmond.
This is the fourth long-haul buildout
announced by Zayo in the last six
months. The most recent example was
the Dallas-Phoenix route, but Zayo is also
building significant fiber between Dallas
and Omaha as well as adding a new link
between Salt Lake City and Sacramento.
The Atlanta-DC buildout is expected to
be ready by the end of 2017.
Strength through connections
Allied Fiber, the first open-access,
integrated, network-neutral colocation
and dark fiber superstructure in the US,
and the city of Palm Coast, Florida, have
connected their respective open-access
fiber networks.
Palm Coast's FiberNET network now has
access through Allied Fiber to the major
content distribution centers throughout
the state of Florida. The fiber connection
is expected to drive job growth and help
cable television and Internet providers
in the community offer improved service
and pricing to local consumers.
Palm
Coast
recently
completed
construction of a lateral in Bunnell, FL,
that connects FiberNET to the Allied Fiber
route and will allow businesses to access
multiple service providers, including
Joytel, a Jacksonville-based wireless
service provider.
“The new fiber optic connection to
Allied Fiber will enhance our city's ability
to attract new businesses to the area,”
said Jim Landon, manager of the city
of Palm Coast. “We're confident it will
help spur economic development and
further improve the excellent quality of life
enjoyed by our citizens and visitors.”
Hunter Newby, CEO of Allied Fiber, said:
“By creating a competitive market, it will
help maintain cost flexibility, enabling
an increase in Internet access. It will also
stimulate significant economic benefits
and bring new jobs to the community,
boosting our local and country's GDP.”
