CREDIT PROGRAM,

FLEXIBLE

East school district and community school (but apparently not chartered

nonpublic schools) must comply with a plan developed by the state

board of education for students to earn units of high school credit based

on a demonstration of subject area competency, instead of or in

combination with completing hours of classroom instruction.

The plan must also include a standard method for recording

demonstrated proficiency on high school transcripts.

Please see

Appendix O

for information relating to the flexible credit

program.

Members of joint vocational school districts may be paid up to $125 for

each meeting attended plus mileage at the rate established by board

resolution. The compensation must be established by resolution of the

board, and no board member can receive an increase while in office.

Each JVSD board member may also be compensated for attendance at

Board members may also participate in the vocational school district’s

health insurance plan, but they must bear the entire cost.

CURRICULUM

REQUIREMENTS

EXEMPTION

Students entering ninth grade for the first time on or after July 1, 2014

and until July 1, 2016 may be eligible for an exemption from the

curriculum requirements for graduation if other conditions are met.

In addition to having a student success plan, students would need to

satisfy the following curriculum requirements:

1)Four (rather than three) units of math, one of which must be

probability and statistics, computer programming, applied

mathematics, quantitative reasoning, or other ODE approved

course;

2)Five (rather than six) elective units; and

3)All science units would need to include inquiry-based laboratory

experience engaging students in asking valid science questions

and gathering and analyzing information.

Districts will need to report annually to ODE the number of students who

opt for graduation under the exemption and the number of students

completing their student success plans and graduating from high school.

CUSTODY ORDER,

CHILD

A school district will require a copy of a child custody order or court

decree or modification be provided to the school district upon admission

of a child to school or when any modification takes place.

No school official can be admitted from a Department of Youth Services

facility unless the superintendent of the entering district has received

from DYS an updated copy of the pupil’s transcript, a report outlining the

behavior of the pupil while in custody, an individualized education

program (if one exists), and “a summary of the institutional record of the

child’s behavior.”

However, a school cannot deny admission to a child placed in a foster

home or residential facility solely because the child cannot present proof
