Page Background

For students of social and political doctrine

this book is a "must". Its usefulness is to be seen

in the learned author's appraisal of current pro

blems in the Republic of Ireland. Criteria over a

wide range are offered enabling one to test ideals,

and the means for realising them, in the context

of a society that tends to be turning away more

and more from democratic objectives. When the

question, "What am I doing for Ireland?" is posed,

the answer is very likely to be : "opportunities for

doing anything worthwhile are

few

and

far

between''. Some will say that too much emphasis

is placed on the importance of institutions (in

cluding those of the State) in economic affairs.

Too often personal initiative is stifled by excessive

control.

The author has thrown out a challenge that

may be unpalatable; nonetheless if his analysis

and assessment of the problems are accepted by

those interested in the future of Ireland there is no

reason why his message could not be used as an

exercise in leadership of a high order.
