precluding newcomers. Rather we believe in allow
ing as many to participate as possible and feel that
by doing so, the society will accordingly produce
a greater number of experienced speakers rather
than a few who are exceptionally skilled.
Further, there is a tradition in the society that
heckling is kept at a minimum and that a maiden
speaker
in particular be given a sympathetic
hearing. Many are especially encouraged by this
and in the first term of this session, twenty-two
maiden speeches were delivered, far more than
most societies will permit.
It should also be mentioned that the society
awards more medals for debate than any other
society we know of. Gold medals are presented
for oratory, legal debate and impromptu speaking.
Silver medals are presented for Irish debate and
for the best first year speeches and are also given
to the runner-up in each of the other three cate
gories.
We
strongly
recommend
that non-members
should avail themselves of the coming term to
familiarise themselves with the society and to take
the initial steps in learning to debate.

"WHICH?"
ON COMPENSATION FOR INJURIES
The October
Which?
enquired into compen
sation for injuries and found that nearly one per
son in four was satisfied with the way in which
the case was handled. One in five had either
changed or thought of changing their solicitor.
Cases settled out of court took on an average two
years and those cases which went to court took on
average over three years. Only four in every ten
people were satisfied with the way in which the
cases were handled. The three main reasons for
dissatisfaction were lack of effort, of understanding
and of communication.
It would appear therefore that the aspect of this
blemish on
solicitor/client
relationship
is
the
failure to communicate with the client—one in
five said they were not kept informed at all.
The enquiry related solely to claims in England,
but it would be interesting to know whether the
conditions are any better here.
