Niacinamide may be partially hydrolyzed to nicotinic acid in the predrying evaporation step

during processing of Similac powder (nicotinic acid may also be determined with this method in

certain products).

The CAS# for nicotinic acid is 59-67-6.

The chemical structure for nicotinic acid is shown below:

NOTE: USP Catalog 1461003, niacin, is nicotinic acid.

USP catalog 1462006, niacinamide is the compound fortified into Abbott Nutrition

products and the primary form of niacin quantified by this method.

Analytical Balances: Capable of accurately weighing at least 5 mg (for standards), an Analytical

four place, and a top loading two place capable of weighing to several hundred grams.

Examples: Mettler Model AE163, Mettler Model AE100 and Mettler Model PG2002, or

equivalent.

b)

Laboratory Water Purifier: Millipore Milli-Q Water Purification System, or equivalent.
