briefly retired, but was then invited to be a

non-executive director at his son-in-law’s

soon-to-be-launched agency, Initials. Roger

spent 10 years with Initials, helping it grow

from its launch to a pre-eminent position

in the marketing communications industry

today, with 50 employees and a blue chip

client list. Roger cites his competitive nature

and his drama skills learnt at St Edward’s

as having contributed significantly to his

business career. He represented Teddies at

seven different sports, played scrum half in

the 1960 unbeaten rugby side, and starred

in both school and house plays. He became

the go-to person for public speaking in

his agency, and was frequently invited to

speak at conferences to audiences ranging

from a roomful in Bournville to 1,200

delegates at the International Marketing

and Sales Conference for South African

Breweries in Sun City! He also published

articles in the marketing trade press, and

latterly contributed to the development

of the Initials agency brand with pieces in

the media and on their website. He lists

his retirement interests as golf, foreign

travel, music and, naturally, the theatre and

watching major sporting events.

Tim Plant

(B, 1957-1961) let the OSE

Office know that to celebrate 40 years of

mural painting, he and his wife Ana, who

painted the mural in the Dining Hall, have

published a new catalogue containing

more than 70 colour plates of murals

painted by them in various parts of the

world over the past four decades.

If you are interested in this kind of

work, further details can be seen on

the keynote speaker at the Global Health

event at the Royal College of Physicians of

Edinburgh in February 2018.

1959

Chris Brockbank

(E, 1955-1959) told the

OSE Office that from the days of wearing

short trousers, flying with the RAF was

his intended career (his father was an RAF

MO in the War). However after two years

in the RAF he reached different career

conclusions and then served eight years in

the RAFVR helping run ATC Squadrons,

and also flying glider tugs at weekends.

Most of his working life has been with

multi-national companies, Kodak and Bunzl,

followed by ESV plc, in marketing and

business management roles. Some Kodak

remits included marketing research, aerial

and satellite photography, and advising

Keele University’s Air Photo Library

project. Latterly, he worked with Allied

Dunbar and Zurich in financial planning for

business. Chris became associated with the

Lincolnshire Bomber Command Memorial

(LBCM) Trust in August 2012. Following

the digital archive interviewing training

in November 2014, he has conducted a

fascinating range of veteran interviews of

ground personnel and aircrew, with some

amazing tales of the unexpected.

1961

Roger Hyslop

(G, 1956-1961) has

finally retired from business (for the third

and last time!) at the age of 74. After

spending five years at Nestlé learning the

skills of marketing, he transferred to the

agency side and in 1975 founded Triangle

Communications with three colleagues.

Triangle specialised in the emerging

discipline of sales promotion, creating

many award-winning campaigns for famous

companies and brands, including Cadbury,

a relationship Roger enjoyed continuously

for 27 years. As one of the industry

pioneers of creative sales promotion, he

was made a Fellow of the Institute of Sales

Promotion in 2003. When the business,

by this time a group of five companies

with over 150 employees, was acquired

by the French Publicis Group in 2005 he
