ntematlonal students pro–
duced a colorful fashion
show which displayed tradi–
tional costumes form various
nations. From China To
South America, many ancient
cultures and traditions were
represented. By bringing the
dress of other nations
to
USD,
it gave students the opportu–
nity to broaden their hori–
zons. Students eagerly
looked on while their peers il–
lustrated the various aspects
of ethnic tradition from every
comer of the world.
The heritage of these nations Is
displayed with great enthusiasm
by students of USD.

vett fontaine, director
of the International Stu–
dents Organization, was
raised in Cuba and later
moved to the United States as
a political refugees. Taking
advantage of being in a free
country and having the op–
portunity to develop her full
potential, she chose a career
in the education field. After
working in the Law School for
Yvette Fonta,tne
four years, fontaine became the director of the International Stu–
dents Office. The purpose of ISO was to look out for the welfare of
all international students.
It
also provided assistance on immigra–
tion matters and coordinated all campus and community services
available to foreign students. ISO was a social club that worked to
bring a cultural exchange between American students and interna–
tional students. "/

Special Project

aving been part of the
USD community as both
a student and a faculty mem–
ber,
Karen Reed
was espe–
cially knowledgeable of the
campus activities and organi–
zations. She was the director
of special events and had sev–
eral main responsibilities.
She was not only head of the
Panhellenic Association but
also worked to coordinate
programs which encouraged
Karen Reed
student involvement in the USD community. Reed was also the
director of the student development transcript program which as–
signed an upperclassman mentor to incoming freshmen. Reed
helped integrate a new program in order to increase commuter
students· interest in campus activities. Her duties further included
coordinating the university's computer system and assisting un–
dergraduate students with the process of withdrawal. "/
believe
students ' social skills are as Important as their career skills. ,,
Because she believed so strongly in the university's values and
philosophy, Reed tried to incorporate these ideas in all her interac–
tion with the students.
