A province that do not close
When autumn andwinter arrive theprovinceof Cádiz has still a lot tooffer
THE HIDDEN BEAUTY OF
SANLÚCAR AND ITS GASTRONOMY
THREE THOUSAND YEARS
OF HISTORY IN A BAY
Cádiz bay has three thou-
sand years of history, so-
mething that no other
western region can show
off. During autumn and
winter, there is a special
light in Cádiz, the city
with three thousand years
of history that keeps on
renovating its patrimony
with new acquisitions. One of the la-
test to arrive was the archaeological
place Gadir, which shows how Cádiz
was 2000 years BC. It shows a little re-
creation of the Phoenician, who arri-
ved to the end of the known world at
that time, way of life and also some vi-
deo projections. And before
spring comes with its colours
and scents in the city, one of
the most important festivities
of the city is held: the Carnival;
declared Fiesta of International
Interest for Tourists and one of
the most famous of Europe. It
would not be fair leaving aside
this walk around the bay other
villages such as Puerto Real
(with a surprising gastro-
nomy), San Fernando (the Panteón de
Marinos Ilustres is a must for history
lovers), El Puerto (which has integra-
ted the river in the city to make it a li-
ving element), Chiclana (with its wine
cellars) and Rota (with an historic
quarter who has not lost its charm).
THE ARABIC INTERIOR REGION
SHOWS OFF AFTER SUMMER
La Janda region has two areas perfectly divi-
ded, the coast part (which includes Conil,
Vejer and Barbate) and the interior part
(which includes Medina, Alcalá de los Gazu-
les, Benalup-Casas Viejas and Paterna). In
this time of the year, when the soft weather
of summer starts to disappear, it is when the
Arabic past of this area, border between
Christians and Muslims
during generations, ta-
kes the main role. Medi-
na Sidonia, in this case,
has no opponents. Its
Arabic walls has been
preserved spectacularly
well and its gastronomy
has reminders from that
time, specially, its well-
known alfajores, heirs of the Maghrebi
sweets. But there would be someone that
would say that Vejer, always in the most
beautiful Spanish villages’ ran-
kings, could be an opponent. Its
alleys, its whitewashed streets
and its views over the region upon
the mountain where it is located,
turn it in a unique place, transfor-
ming it into a magical spectacle at
night with the light that illumina-
tes it. Other attractions of the re-
gion are to enjoy the sea by wal-
king around its wide beaches without the
summer overcrowdings.
Sanlúcar is well-
known all over Spain
by its horse races over
the sand beach.
However, once the
summer is over, visi-
tors that arrive to this
corner of the nor-
theast coast of Cádiz
could keep on enjo-
ying its attractions.
Among them, the beauty of
the city by itself, with its pa-
lace-houses and its marve-
llous churches, should be
highlighted. Walking around
the city is discovering the
most elegant and exclusive
Andalucía, where
the classic ele-
ments have been
reinvented and
preserved, like the
Town hall itself.
Obviously you
cannot leave apart
its natural envi-
ronment, knowing
that Sanlúcar is the
gate of the Doñana natural re-
serve. And for those who are
not yet convinced, they must
remember that this area has a
spectacular gastronomy
which includes prawns, man-
zanilla wine and rock fish.
