Upgraded high speed pipe purging system
The upgraded QuickPurge
®
III pipe
purging system has been introduced by
Huntingdon Fusion Techniques (HFT) for
high speed pipe joint welding.
Using Intacal
®
II combined with the
integrated PurgeGate
®
device makes
it possible to safely inflate the dams
with argon gas, prior to releasing it for
purging the space between the dams
where the weld joint is located.
It is almost impossible for the inflatable
dams to burst as a result of undue
pressure increase or accidental flow
increase of the inflation and purging
gas.
The sleeve between the dams reduces
the volume to be purged by two thirds,
ensuring a fast purge time down to ten
parts per million of oxygen.
HFT has a jointly owned patent for the
design, having originally designed it with
the help of Babcock International (now
Doosan Babcock) for the contract to lay
a stainless steel pipeline along the south
coast of England for the transport of
liquid natural gas from the Isle of Grain.
Sleeve lengths for each size have been
carefully calculated so that the system
can be pulled around 90° elbows for the
purging of connecting joints.
QuickPurgeIII systems are available
for each API pipe diameter, with an
expansion range to cover all internal
diameters from schedule 10 to Schedule
160 and the even thicker pipe wall
standards. Return on investment (ROI)
charts are available, to show that the
payback for each size will normally be
between one and two welds, giving
companies the opportunity to make
significant savings on larger contracts.
The materials chosen for QuickPurgeIII
are resistant to the higher weld heat
present now that the dams are slightly
closer to the welds, and at the same
time exhibit lower outgassing rates to
prevent weld contamination. For welds
that are pre-heated and post-weld heat
treated, HFT manufactures the special
HotPurge™III matching range, for
higher and longer temperature exposure
requirements.
With QuickPurgeII, some customers
requested longer sleeves for a variety of
applications because of the positioning
necessary for the second dam. This
option is also available for the new
QuickPurgeIII version.

Power tubes
For over 60 years e2v has been
supplying customers with power tubes
that provide both performance and
long life.
The tubes offered by e2v range in
power output from 30 to 530kW.
Many of the triodes and tetrodes that
the company manufactures can be
used as direct equivalents for tubes
created by other manufacturers, or
can be used to replace them with
e2v’s guidance.
All tubes are subjected to extensive
high voltage conditioning and full
functional RF/DC testing procedures,
and a dedicated engineering team can
provide advice on any particular tube
or application.
e2v states that it strives to be more
responsive to customer needs
by investing effort in reducing
manufacturing lead-time and improving
customer service. The company offers
extensive technical support throughout
the supplier/customer relationship,
from initial product selection through
to the tubes being in operation at the
customer site.
In order to meet customer
requirements, e2v is committed to
working in partnership with customers
and developing collaborative solutions
for new and existing applications.
