School of Engineering

The hallmarks of UC Merced’s School of

Engineering are innovation, diversity, sus-

tainability and personal interaction be-

tween world-class faculty and students.

Together, they seek to have transforma-

tional impacts on society and the world

by creating new ideas and transforming

them into products and services that im-

prove people’s lives. At UC Merced, this

problem solving and creativity take place

in a highly dynamic learning environment

that focuses on future technologies and

enterprise.

Students and faculty delve into such in-

novative topics as examining the effects

of climate change both near far, from the

Sierra Nevada to Palau; and connecting

eye-tracking hardware with a robotic exo-

skeletal arm to further understand the

mind-body connection and, someday, to

help people with disabilities have better

use of their limbs.

School of Natural Sciences

naturalsciences.ucmerced.edu

A top priority in the School of Natu-

ral Sciences at UCMerced is tomeet

the increasing need for well-trained

scientists, scientifically trained de-

cision-makers and a scientifically lit-

erate public to meet the global and

technological challenges of the 21st

century. At UC Merced, a passion

for scientific excellence inspires

research that has far-reaching im-

plications to advance the health

and well-being of humans and the

environment, while making funda-

mental discoveries about the world

in which we all live.

Faculty and students in the school

are doing this by tracking resistant

infections to show that hospitals are

important in stopping the evolution

of resistant bacteria, and studying

how blood stem cells are established

during fetal development and how

they give rise to the cells that make

up our immune system.

Each of UC Merced’s three schools has its own transfer requirements to be considered for

admission. Inside this pocket, you’ll find comprehensive lists of courses that are required

and strongly recommended for every major in all three schools, as well as a useful resource

for information and requirements for the Transfer Admission Guarantee.

School of Social Sciences,

Humanities and Arts (SSHA)

ssha.ucmerced.edu

Students in SSHA explore the current

and historical dimensions of human ex-

istence, from artistic and literary expres-

sion, the acquisition and the functions

of language, the nature of the mind, the

principles of economics and manage-

ment, and the improvement of public

health. Though SSHA students don’t

necessarily major in technology related

fields, the knowledge about the world

that they acquire allows them to have a

role in those fields – and any field, really

– in understanding the human dimen-

sions of the application of technology.

Student and faculty research includes

taking an in-depth look at deception

from the perspective of how the act of ly-

ing affects a person’s facial expressions,

body language and other fine-grained

motor behaviors; and using innovative

eye-tracking and motion-tracking equip-

ment to study how humans perceive and

respond to what they hear and see.
