rate when the components of the mix are
available on site to replenish the load bins
as needed. It is also capable of mixing ex-
act volumes of specific strength concretes,
through programmable computer software,
within minutes of each other. The software
enables the operator to print out an analysis
of the concrete mixed that indicates volume,
specification and component mixtures for
reference and quality control. Also, while a
traditional mixer requires thousands of litres
of water for clean-out; the specialised unit
requires hardly any – making it extremely
environmentally friendly. Another benefit to
the user is ‘fresh’ concrete that is available
immediately (the cement, water and additives
are mixed in six seconds). This eliminates the
possibility of concrete curing while it is being
transported to site.
“The truck handed over at the show was built
for a customer that specifically requested off-
road capabilities; but of course this is a flex-
ible option,” explained Taftman, pointing out
that the same mixing solution vehicle could
be configured for urban applications.
“This illustrates the importance of our thor-
ough needs analysis,” he continued. “We
endeavour to minimise our customers’ total
operating costs. Operating margins are be-
coming tighter and tighter so the provision
of the best possible solutions to our custom-
ers is very important to us.”
With this example of the two types of mixers
available, the same formula can be applied
to the rest of Scania’s product range.
“Our customers are experts in their fields
of business; logistics, mixing, moving heavy
machinery, etc, but we are experts when it
comes to their mobility. It’s generally impos-
sible for them to know what the best possible
solution is for them, which why we analyse
their needs, converse with our body-part-
ners and then return to the customer with
a comprehensive solution proposal,” said
Taftman. “We believe that as a result of the
interface between ourselves and our partner
body builders we can build any vehicle for
any application.”
