The Business of Sculpture
woman who pursued a sculpture career despite the obstacles in her way,
including racism and sexism. She’s a great example of how hard work
can lead to a successful business, even in the face of the worst barriers.
Augusta Savage was born in 1892 in Florida. She started sculpting
when she very young, making animal figures out of the clay she found in
the ground. Her family wasn’t very supportive, but she kept on sculpting.
She even won a prize at the county fair. Then Augusta started selling
her sculptures locally, though her first efforts to set up a business failed
financially.
