Design decisions for fabricated structures are rarely made based solely on technical grounds. Safety

requirements, cost restrictions, structural performance demands, and increasingly, environmental pressures all

contribute to the decision-making process. The importance of raw materials and energy efficiency is constantly

growing. This has motivated many industries to perform total lifecycle cost assessment and environmental

footprint computations, both of which now integrally influence design and purchasing decisions. Advanced

design solutions incorporating high strength steels, stainless steels, aluminium and other advanced materials

provide considerable potential for raw materials and energy savings, improved performance and lower costs.

To help address these challenges, and to provide a global forum for the exchange of new technical and scientific

results, the Welding Society of Finland will host the IIW International Conference on High Strength Materials –

Challenges and Applications. This prestigious event will be held in Helsinki on 2-3 July 2015 in conjunction with

the 68

th

IIW Annual Assembly. The conference will have sessions focusing on challenges and solutions covering

all aspects of joining, processing and design performance of high strength materials. Special attention will be

devoted to highlighting successful applications of high strength materials in industrial and commercial products.

The conference will be opened with the distinguished Portevin Lecture delivered by eminent scientist Prof.

David Porter from Oulu University on the theme “High strength steels: Challenges and applications”. Prof Porter

has more than 30 years of experience developing new and novel high strength steel grades for applications in

welded structures.

International keynote speakers representing key scientific and technology sectors will be included in the

programme. More than 100 high quality papers from 26 countries have been selected based on an international

peer review process. Industrial sectors of interest include Shipbuilding, Transportation, Energy, Pressure and

Process Equipment and Aerospace. Technology-based topics will include:

• Solid state welding

• Innovative joining methods for high strength materials

• Welding physics

• Arc and power beam processes

• Materials performance after joining

• Fatigue and fracture

• Design and fabrication
