double was joined by a Martyrs quad of

Dave Lambourn

,

Hamish Floyd

,

Mike

Lambourn

and

Andrew Bird

, who were

fastest in their division but unopposed in

the Masters event. The same quad raced in

November at the Vesta Vets Fours Head in

London, winning the A category, while

Floyd

,

Wiggins

,

Will Morgan

and

Dan Cadoux-

Hudson

(C, 2001-2006) raced in the B

category finishing fifth.

At the start of September, an VIII of

George Kitovitz

,

Will Morgan

,

George

Adams

,

Hugo Marsh

(E, 2010-2014),

Felix

Obholzer

(H, 2014-2016),

Freddie Myatt

(H, 2010-2012),

Rupert Singfield

(C,

2011-2016) and

Charlie Gosling

(B, 2011-

2016) assembled at Putney for the annual

Alleynian Challenge Cup for school alumni.

It is reported that they struggled with some

dubious equipment but nevertheless put in a

strong performance against a much younger

Westminster VIII in a brand new Empacher.

We struggled to fill an VIII for the

Wallingford Head at the end of November,

but put out a boat with the help of a former

parent, a friend and a new recruit,

Oliver

Brocklehurst

(E, 1969-1974), thus taking

over fromWiggins as most ‘experienced’

in the boat. The crew of cox

Jo Street

(D,

2002-2007),

Mike Lambourn

,

Hamish

Roots

,

Dan Cadoux-Hudson

,

Will Morgan

,

Oliver Brocklehurst

,

JohnWiggins

, guest

Chris Thomson and parent Gerard Simmonds

finished in the top fifty and 3rd in the Masters

C category.

Training continues for a strong core group,

though mostly in isolation with the occasional

coming together for races. An VIII rowed in

the 2017 Vesta Veterans Head of the River

in late March, finishing 3rd in the Masters B

category. A full report will following the next

. Finally, we wish every

success to younger OSE who continue actively

and not least to those pursuing their dreams

via GB trials headed by Olympian,

Stewart

Innes

(H, 2004-2009), winner in pairs at the

February GB assessment.

Cricket

Cricketer Cup

With the weather forcing the abandonment

of the previous Sunday’s original away fixture

at Clifton College, the Martyrs hosted Old

Cliftonians on Upper One in the 1st Round

of the Cricketer Cup. With a strong side the

Martyrs won the toss and elected to bat. After

an explosive start from

Miles Hammond

(H, 2009-2014) (41) the first wicket of

Joe

Barrett

(B, 2010-2014) (4) fell. This failed to

slow down the scoring rate as 2015 1st XI

captain

Calvin Dickinson

(C, 2010-2015)

(27) continued in the same vein as Hammond.

After just nine overs the Martyrs were 70-1

and looked set for a formidable score, but

the loss of two quick wickets checked our

progress, falling to 84-3, and bringing stand-

in-captain

John Barrett

(E, 2000-2005) (46)

to join

Feroz Baig

(H, 2009-2014) (48) at

the crease. The two re-built the innings at a

very reasonable rate and at 177-3 off 30 overs

it looked like a huge score was back on the

cards. Unfortunately, in true Martyrs fashion,

five quick wickets fell and we were reduced

to 185-8. Unable to recover from this, we

were eventually all out for a disappointing, and

below par, 204 in just the 45th over.

In the field, we started well with an early

wicket for

Harry Sutton

(C, 2000-2005)

(1-28) and, although we managed to take

regular wickets through

Freddie Simon

(F,

2008-2013) (2-27) and

RuairiWillis

(F, 2008-

2013) (2-11)), the total was always never quite

enough. Old Cliftonians reached the target

in the 36th over with 3 wickets in hand to

rather prematurely end another Cricketer Cup

campaign. Thanks as always to the school for

hosting both teams so well. Fingers crossed

we can fulfil our potential in 2017 and put

together the extended run in the competition

that we are undoubtedly capable of.
