Ladies Hockey
Dean Close ‘Sixes’
On Saturday 22nd October the Martyrs
Ladies Hockey Club made their long awaited
competitive debut at the inaugural Dean
Close ‘Sixes’! Winning their pool quite
convincingly with victories over Bromsgrove
(3-1), Bryanston (4-1) and Cheltenham
College (3-1) and drawing with hosts Dean
Close (1-1), the Ladies progressed to the
semi-finals – an even more impressive
effort in light of the fact that we lacked a
regular goalkeeper, so took it in turns to
don the pads! In the 2nd Semi-Final against
an obdurate Rendcomb side, the Ladies
were unable to break the deadlock in either
normal or extra time, which meant penalty
strokes! With
Fran Jolley
(D, 2004-2009)
excelling between the sticks, the score was
2-2 after each side had taken three strokes,
meaning sudden death! Unfortunately, we
missed our first sudden death stroke and
Rendcomb converted theirs; thus progressing
to the Final and condemning us to the 3rd
/ 4th Place Play-Off, which we lost to Dean
Close, to finish 4th out of the eleven teams
that entered – a very pleasing effort!
Despite not having played together
since school, and a few of the girls being
a bit rusty, we gelled superbly and played
fantastically well, with
Alicia Berkin
(D,
2003-2008) excelling and deservingly being
awarded ‘Player of the Tournament’ – a
fantastic achievement! We had a really good
day out; enjoying both the hockey and, in
particular, the social side during and after
the tournament!
I have organised another event in
Battersea Park, London on Sunday 7th May
and we will be returning to the Dean Close
‘Sixes’ on Sunday 22nd October to try and
go a few places better! Please do get in touch
if you would be interested in getting involved,
whether you’re still playing or haven’t played
in years, as you would be most welcome!
