St Edward’s School SocietyAnnual

Dinner 2016

On 19th March the School welcomed back

OSE across the generations for the Annual

Dinner. The Warden outlined his future plans

for the School, including a new library, hall

and academic centre. President

Georgina

Dennis

(D, 1986-1988) gave her parting

speech, and wished

Mike Palau

(B, 1959-

1964) success as the new President.

Cardiff Lunch

OSE gathered on 16th April 2016 in Cardiff.

John Wiggins, the Hon. Sec., brought greetings

from the Warden and an upbeat report on

the School, and Philip Thomas provided some

recently acquired St Edward’s memorabilia

(passed on from a singing acquaintance with a

long line of relatives at Teddies) that anchored

us in the past. And, on the subject of singing,

the nine (plus a silent two – excused because

they had never had to sit the new boys’ test)

produced a most creditable performance of

‘Carmen’ such that it resounded around the

OSE Music

Celebration

Brilliant idea! Link the regular concert of

the St Edward's Singers (current parents

and parents of OSE) with the St Edward's

Chamber Choir and Orchestra, plus the

Chapel Choir and add in visiting OSE singers

and instrumentalists, to celebrate the newly

opened Ogston Music School. One-off

singing days are all this former Teddies

Music Scholar can commit to these days,

but what a treat to be singing with real

orchestral accompaniment instead of the

more usual organ or piano. We performed

the four Handel

Coronation Anthems

, with

an intensive practice session in the morning

for the visitors and a full rehearsal in the

afternoon. Part 1 of the evening concert in

the Hall was a performance of J.S. Bach's

Ascension Cantata. As we OSE looked on,

my neighbour Jeremy in the tenor section

(ten years ahead of me in Mac's) agreed

that St Edward's music was far in advance of

anything either of us had experienced in our

day. The confident soloists, all current pupils,

made a convincing go of both the music

and the German, and the orchestra was of

the highest standard too. The new Music

School, whose state-of-the-art Recital Room

was the venue for our morning rehearsal,

is bigger, brighter and altogether better

equipped than what went before. That

was the venue for the our post-concert

entertainment, with the school jazz band,

lively and highly accomplished. Archive

photos in the corridors featured Directors

of Music from earlier times, as well as the

school orchestra, and the CCF band. Earlier,

a visit to the Chapel reminded us of the rich

heritage of choral music in the Chapel Choir

- and, of course, Congegagger Pragger.

And we were entertained to both lunch

and supper. Lots of opportunities to meet

and chat with other OSE, older or younger,

who share the experience of Teddies music.

We'll be back.
