could mention a number of these old firms with

fine traditions. The Hardmans have continued

for four generations and the Hamertons. Mr.

William Fry founded the firm of William Fry &

Son and he was followed by his son, Sir William

Fry, then came W. Haughton Fry, and now his

son, here to-day. Archibald Robinson & Son,

another firm of four generations, now represented

by Archie Robinson, great-grandson of

the

founder. These are only a few of the long-estab

lished firms.

As the sands of life run down, passing through

the hour glass, I shall continue to remember your

great kindness, and I only trust that there may

be many other portraits around our Hall to keep

company with mine, for I feel that I am not the

only one entitled to the great honour which you

have paid to me. I thank you, Mr. Hamill, for

originating the idea. I thank the President and

Council for arranging for the painting of the

portrait, and my brothers and sisters of my

profession, who have so kindly joined in the

presentation. I shall remember your kindness

until the closing days of my life. Many thanks to

one and all.

I would also like to thank Mr. Leo Whelan for

the time, attention and care which he gave to

the painting of my portrait. It was a great pleas

ure to be associated with him and most restful

to be in his studio with no telephone rings or

other interruptions."
