27km BuBi pipes for North Sea oil and gas field
Companies from the oil and gas industry
have for decades relied on the stability
and long life of mechanically linedButting
bi-metal pipes (BuBi
®
pipes). They bring
benefits when the requirements for the
pipe caused by pressure and corrosion
can be distributed between the inner
and outer pipe.
The BuBi pipe has a wide range of
possible uses. For example, Butting
has manufactured 27km of pipes for
the Andrew project. The oil and gas
field of the same name is located in the
North Sea, around 230km north-east
of Aberdeen, and covers an area of
27km². The accessible reserves are to
be found at around 115m water depth
and amount to about 150mn barrels
of crude oil and natural gas. Extraction
takes place via a single platform, which
also serves the oil and gas in the
neighbouring Cyrus and Farragon fields.
One advantage of the BuBi pipe is
the large number of possible material
combinations. In this case, the customer
chose DNV grade 450 (outer pipe) with
316L (inner pipe). The size was 355.6 x
(14.3+3) mm.
Butting delivers the pipes to the town
of Wick in the north of Scotland, where
the pipes are welded into bundles
that consist of an outer support pipe
containing several production and
service pipelines, hydraulic pipes and
umbilicals. The BuBi pipes with their
corrosion-resistant inner pipes are
used for the pipeline through which
the aggressive oil and gas mixture is
extracted.
For this project, a total of four bundles
are used, in lengths of 6-8km each. After
welding has been completed onshore,
the bundles are launched to sea by
two ships. Later they will transport the
resources extracted from the well to the
Andrew platform.
In addition to the pipes for the bundles,
Butting has also produced and supplied
riser pipes and pipes for tie-in spools
in Super-duplex for the Andrew
programme.
