Wire & Cable ASIA – March/April 2012

15

LS Cable & System has won two

contracts, worth a total of $102 million,

to supply power cables to Qatar.

The company will supply 220kV level

extra high-voltage transmission cables

to the Qatar General Electricity & Water

Corporation, and deliver large-capacity

electric transmission 1,000V bus ducts

to the Public Works Authority of Qatar

for the Hamad Medical City project.

Of the two projects, the former was

initiated when Qatar realised that its

current power grid could not effectively

keep pace with the increasing power

demand generated by the continual

economic

development

and

urbanisation. For this project, LS Cable

& System will supply a total of 157km

of 220kV level extra high-voltage

cables and joint kits to the Doha area

by July 2013.

The second contract is to supply

Hyundai E&C with bus ducts, used in

buildings and factories to transmit

large amounts of electricity through a

small space.

Middle East countries are currently

promoting petrochemical, refinery and

power plant projects as well as

large-scale

public

works

and

construction projects to boost their

economies with extra spending.

A news report from Kenya states that, “an Indian firm will

construct a substation and power transmission lines that

will be used to evacuate electricity from two power plants

at Olkaria in Naivasha.

“KEC International, which signed the $27 million contract with

electricity generation company, KenGen, will design, supply

and install a substation and lines for transmitting power from

Olkaria 1 and IV, and feeding to the national grid.

“Recently, KenGen contracted a consortium of Toyota

Tsusho Corporation of Japan and Hyundai Engineering

Company Ltd of Korea to upgrade Olkaria I to produce an

additional 140MW, and construct a new Olkaria IV at a

cost of about $400 million.

“The project, which will increase three-fold the amount of

power generated from geothermal sources from the

current 150MW to 430MW, is expected to feed the

national power grid by April 2014.”
