1980s

United States assists the nation of the Bahamas in a crackdown on

illegal drugs.

1992

A pro-business administration led by Hubert A. Ingraham is voted

into power.

1997

Ingraham is reelected prime minister.

1999

Hurricanes Dennis and Floyd wreak havoc throughout the islands

of the Bahamas.

2002

In May, the Progressive Liberal Party wins the election and Perry

Christie becomes the new prime minister of the Bahamas.

2007

The Free National Movement party wins a majority in elections for

the House of Assembly, and FNM’s Hubert A. Ingraham replaces

Perry Christie as prime minister.

2010

In April, Sir Arthur Foulkes is appointed governor-general of the

Bahamas.

2012

In parliamentary elections, the Progressive Liberal Party regains

power and Perry Christie becomes prime minister again; in

October, Hurricane Sandy kills two people and causes $700 million

in damage.

2014

The unemployment rate in the Bahamas reaches 15.4 percent; more

than 5.5 million people visit the Bahamas.
