6. Image contouring
• Automatic contouring of PET image data seems to be beneficial:
objectivity, reproducibility.
• PET has low spatial resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)
• Blurred images with partial volume effects (PVE) for small objects.

ESTRO teaching course on advanced imaging techniques
(A) [18F]-FDG autoradiography of a mouse leg bearing a tumour. In order to mimic the limited
spatial resolution of PET images (C), the autoradiography image in (A) was blurred with the
point-spread function of the PET system used in (C) and resampled to the same voxel size (B).
The original PET image is shown in (C).
