MIXED DRINKS.

^53

of talking over their secrets while they drink, presum

ing no one hears them. The Sensible clerk will not

appear to listen to whatthey are saying, and if he hears

anything in spite of himself it should find an eternal

grave in his heart—never to he resurrected even if there

is money in it for him. It is a matter of honor with

him not to divulge the secrets committed to him by

friends and customers, and not to gossip about his

employer's affiairs or habits. Otherwise he will not be

recognized as a desirable clerk and will soon be out of

ajob never to get another. There is too much of this

in all kinds of business, but as a rule the bar clerk like

the bank clerk is much more discreet than some other

classes of employees,to his credit be it said. There is

nothing so ruinous to a young man's prospects in life

as the reputation of being a tattler and gossip unless

it be lewd and frivolous conversation and immoral

habits.

Qualities to be Cultivated.

Honesty and honor, dignity, cheerfulness, humor,

truth, energy, perseverence, diligence, punctuality,

prudence, concentration, decision, conservatism, self-

confidence, practical talent, mental and moral force,

temperance in eating,drinking'and conduct,cleanliness.
