In clinical practice, most

radiologists and surgeons divide

the oesophagus into three parts:

upper third, from the

cricopharyngeus to the superior

portion of the aortic arch;

middle third, from the superior

portion of the aortic arch to the

inferior pulmonary vein;

Distal third, from the inferior

pulmonary vein to the

gastroesophageal junction
