The Public Relations Officer

of the Treasury replied in the " Daily Telegraph "

of 8th May, that " no such orders have been given

or are contemplated."

So far so good, but it

would be interesting to know the source of the

report to the contrary. Have any expressions of

opinion been issued by any Government Depart–

ment to prosecuting counsel or those instructing

them ? The most indirect of such expressions

would, if emanating from an official source, be

improper and indeed illegal."

(Solicitors'Journal,

iyth May, 1947.)

Pretending to be a Solicitor

IN Hall v. Jordan (1947 i All E.R. 826) a solicitor

who had been suspended from practice was found

guilty of wilfully pretending to be qualified to act

as a solicitor during the period of his suspension,

and although this was an aggravating circumstance,

the justices dismissed the information under the

Probation of Offenders' Act, 1907, on payment

of costs on the ground that the matters which

constituted the offence appeared to be isolated

matters. Held by the King's Bench Division that

wilfully pretending to be a solicitor was a serious

offence and one that could not properly be dealt

with under the Probation of Offenders' Act, and

that the case must be remitted to the Justices with

a direction to convict.
