MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL ETIQUETTE.

A member of

the Society sends

the

following information for publication :—

The member put the following query to

the Registrar of

the Royal College

of

Surgeons in Ireland :—

Is a doctor attached to a public hospital

entitled, without the consent of a patient, to

furnish a report on the patient's condition to

an

insurance company, or

the patient's

employer ?

The reply from

the Registrar was as

follows :—

In answer to your enquiry, the British

Medical Association lays down the following

for the guidance of newly-qualified medical

practitioners :—

" The general principle which should

guide a medical practitioner is

that he

should not, without his patient's consent,

voluntarily disclose information which he

has obtained from such patient in the

exercise of his professional duties.

It is

essential that for the proper rendering of

professional

services

there

should be

established a

relationship of

complete

confidence between one who receives and

one who renders the service."
