The Relief of Lucknow.
Early in the year 1857 General Havelock arrived
at Bombay. Here he heard terrible news. About three
weeks before the Sepoys (or native soldiers) in
garrison at the town of Meerut, had broken into
open
mutiny.
The mutiny spread to all the garrison
towns of northern India; one after another they were
taken by the natives. At Cawnpore and Lucknow,
two large cities on the Ganges, a few English soldiers
were still holding out against the sepoys.
x\s soon as possible Havelock, at the head of a
large party of soldiers, set out with orders to march
on to Cawnpore and Lucknow. He succeeded in
getting into Cawnpore, but too late; all the English,
men, women and children, had been murdered. Then
he went on to Lucknow.
At Lucknow the sufferings of the garrison were
very great. For nearly lour months, under command
of their heroic leader, Sir Henry Lawrence, a hand
ful of English soldiers had defended the city against
a large army of natives. Day after day passed by,
and still there was no sign of the eagerly awaited
relief. There was little food left. Every day the
cheeks of the defenders grew more
haggard
, and
brave hearts were on the point of despairing. It was
not for themselves that the soldiers feared, but for
the sake of the helpless women and little children.
Nearer and nearer the enemy’s lines advanced to
the English palace, where the struggle was keenest.
At. last one day a little group of women fell on their
knees and prayed to God that relief might come.
Suddenly a Scotch girl sprang to her feet. »The
hag-pipes!«
she cried. »Dont you hear them? We are
saved! We are saved!« The men ceased firing and
listened for the welcome sound. Yes, faintly through
the noise of cannon and the cries of battle could he
heard the sound of the Scotch bag-pipes. Havelock
was near. Help was at hand.
An hour or two afterwards Havelock, at the head
of his brave Highlanders, entered the palace, and,
with a joy too deep for words, he and the Com
mander shook hands. Lucknow was relieved.
