Olympiapark
Spiridon-Louis-Ring | 80809 München
The Olympiapark is one of the Munich's
most impressive and best-loved venues.
The Munich Olympic Park was built for
the 1972 Olympic Games. The unusual
structure and unique design of both the
building and its world-famous tented roof
were conceived by architect Frei Otto
and engineer Günter Behnisch. Today,
the Olympiapark is THE venue for social,
cultural, company and sporting events.
Munich's residents love walking here,
jogging through the park, or picnicking
on the hills. We recommend parking your
Vespa somewhere here and climbing the
Olympic Mountain. It may be hard work,
but it's definitely worth the effort – the
view of the Olympiapark from the top
is amazing! Don't miss the 291 m-high
Olympic Tower, either. There's a viewing
platform 190 m up with an incredible view
of the city – on a clear day you can even
see as far as the Alps!
BMW Welt
Am Olympiapark 1 | 80809 München
Spare 20-30 minutes to take a peek into
BMW Welt – it's free as well! At BMW Welt,
you can learn about – and experience –
the BMW brand. Put simply, BMW Welt is
the firm's exhibition area, and vehicles
from the MINI, Rolls Royce, BMW i and
BMW M brands are also on show.
BMW Museum
Am Olympiapark 2 | 80809 München
Motorsports combined with elegance
and passion. That's what the BMW
Museum has stood for ever since it was
opened in 1973. The BMW Museum is the
motoring museum for the BMW brand,
showcasing their technical developments
and company history. There are motors,
aeroplanes, motorbikes and vehicles to
admire here from across the decades.
Around 250,000 people visit the BMW
Museum every year, boasting more visitors
annually than any Munich museum save
the Deutsches Museum and Pinakothek
der Moderne.
Englischer Garten
80805 München
You've now reached the entrance to the
Englischer Garten ('English Garden'), one
of Munich's most frequently visited sites!
We recommend you park your Vespa
here and get a feel for this amazing park
on foot.
The English Garden is a municipal park
in the centre of Munich and is one of
the largest parks in Europe. Sir Benjamin
Thompson designed the garden in 1789
for Prince Charles Theodore of Bavaria. It
was called the English Garden due to its
stylistic similarities to an English landscape
park.
It's top of TripAdvisor's list of things to see
and do in Munich, and it's easy to see
why. Extending over 3.7 km², it's larger
than New York's Central Park. The English
Garden has numerous open meadows
and green spaces which, come summer
time, are filled with people sunbathing,
picnicking, or playing sports or music.
But there are also trees and lovely little
paths scattered throughout the park. The
weeping willows are especially worth a
look, as well as the recently renovated
»monopteros« (Greek-inspired round
temple), from where you have a great
view of the park. The Eisbach ('Ice Brook')
which flows through the park really
deserves its name: it's very cold and has a
really strong current. This is where you can
often watch the brave Eisbach surfers
(
p. 193).
Maxvorstadt & Der verrückte Eismacher
Amalienstraße 77 | 80799 München
Welcome to Maxvorstadt, Munich's cultu-
ral and architectural centre! Maxvorstadt
is one of Munich's liveliest districts – during
the daytime there are generally four
times as many people out in the streets as
normally live here. Architectural highlights
include the Königsplatz, Pinakothek and
Siegestor, as well as the Ludwigstraße
high street with its magnificent buildings
on either side. You've now arrived at
one of Munich's best ice cream parlours:
Der verrückte Eismacher ('The Mad Ice
Cream Maker'). You can buy ice creams
