Wire Drawing

Wire & Cable ASIA – March/April 2007
controlled rod breakdown machines
type MSM85. As each capstan is
individually driven, for each draft
different wire elongations can be
realised in a wide range. In the same
way slip on the drawing capstans can
be reduced to a minimum, resulting in
wires with an especially high surface
quality.
Some aluminium wire producers are
using lines, which consist of a type
MSM85 machine connected with a
type RA501 continuous annealer.
Both types of drawing machines are
modular-built in 1-wire and 2-wire-
versions and can work with a speed
up to 40m/s. More than six years ago,
Niehoff delivered the first medium-
wire drawing line (an MH120 drawing
machine with an RA200 annealer) for
the simultaneous production of two
wires made of pure aluminium and
around 30 different aluminium alloys
with a starting diameter of 2 x 1.4mm
and a final diameter of 0.01mm to
0.50mm.
The MMH type multiwire drawing
machines with an integrated RM
continuous annealer for copper wire
are now built to draw up to 42 wires
simultaneously with line speeds of up
to 40m/s. The wires are characterised
by highly uniform properties meeting
or exceeding the highest specifications
and processing requirements.
Features of the machines are special
die holders with an integrated drawing
capstan spray system which are tailor-
made for the specific requirements of
aluminium wire drawing. The drawbox
can be operated either with drawing oil
or drawing emulsion.
The MMH104 is combined with an
RMA201 type continuous electrical
resistance annealer with individually
driven contact pulleys working with a
protective atmosphere. The modular
MKN101 super-fine wire drawing
machine completes Niehoff’s range
of drawing machines. This precisely
engineered machine is designed for
the production of wire to a final finish
diameter of 0.014mm. The MKN101
is based on a compact concept that
enables extreme flexibility and scalable
configurations.
Each pair of cones forms a separate
module, which can be combined
with others to create an 11, 15, 21 or
31-draft machine available either
with or without a final capstan. This
machine is used to draw wire made of
copper and copper alloys as well as
precious metals and aluminium alloys
for a variety of applications, including
the highly demanding medical and
electronics industries.

Since 1967 Italy’s OML has been
producing metallic reels for the wire
and cable industry. They offer a
wide range of reels, standard (fully
maintained, press steel flanges, etc.)
and collapsible, but they can also
produce reels made to customer
specifications.
Production is regulated by CAD-CAM
proceedings that allow the control
of all machines and guarantee the
process and quality.

Based in Italy, Tecno Impianti specialises in the supply of wire drawing and
cold rolling lines for the construction industry.
The smooth or ribbed wire which is
taken-up on the spoolers installed
at the end of the lines is used for
the production of welded mesh and
lattice girders. The standard lines
are composed of: vertical un-coiler
with two tilting arms for permitting
the welding operation between the
coils’ ends without stopping the
line, mechanical descaler, lubricant
dispenser, vertical or horizontal
bullblock and vertical or horizontal spooler. All machines are equipped with
variable-speed drives and AC motors.
Customer specifications can also be met and, depending on whether the
customer utilises dies or rolls for the wire diameter reduction, the bullblock
can be equipped with drawing die-boxes or also with rolling cassettes,
which permit higher working speeds. The bullblock can be equipped with a
single or double-pass capstan, the line can be supplied with two horizontal
or vertical bullblocks and the reduction passes can be one, two or three.
Wire can be taken-up on fixed reels if the wire goes directly to the production
department or on collapsible reels in the event that it goes to stock or is sold,
in the form of bound coils.
Vertical spoolers can also be supplied with a double reel configuration,
allowing the reduction of down-times needed for reel changes.
