CLASS OF 1940
Bet Corbett
, a veteran of the Second World War, was
awarded the Bletchley Park Commemorative Badge for
her efforts decoding the enemy’s communications in the
Pacific Theatre. Bet was a member of the Women’s Royal
Canadian Naval Service (WRCNS or Wrens) and worked in
an outstation at Gordon Head as a wire telegraphist, trained
in the Kana and Japanese codes. The decoders could
anticipate imminent attacks on Allied ships and it was said
that the work which they did “shortened the Pacific war, the
Japanese war, by two years.”
CLASS REPS: Jane Carter MacDonald and Joyce Rous
Sowby
Once again, your Class of 1946 representative
Joyce Rous
Sowby
has to apologize for falling behind on her annual
reporting. I must keep you all up to date on what our old
friends have been doing.
My first bit of information will be about our 70th Reunion,
to which we were all invited. It was carefully planned by
Jane
Carter MacDonald
and
Jeannie Austin Regan
for Saturday,
October 1, 2016 at their senior citizens’ home, Claremont, in
a small dining room which easily held the eight people who
turned up –
Virginia Robertson Macdonald
,
Charlotte
Keens Graham
, Jane Carter MacDonald, Jeannie Austin
Regan, Joyce Rous Sowby,
Mary Bennett Mordy
and her
daughter Caroline, who served as a chauffeur her mother.
The eighth I can’t remember, but it was good to see those
who were able to come, and I hope that we will be able to
attract more classmates next year. Please give it a try!
Our second newsworthy item is, alas, a sad one. 2016 and
2017 have been two years of deaths of our Class of 1946
classmates. Those we have heard about (some have already
been reported to you) are
Elizabeth Ketchum
,
Cynthia
Dean Robertson
,
Ann Cameron
and
Fay Wood
. I would
appreciate hearing of any other news.
Best wishes to you all, from your 1946 Class Reps, Janie
and Joyce.

CLASS OF 1943
Anne Phillips Myers
still lives in Melbourne, Australia. The
last time she travelled was in 2015 when she went to visit
some friends in the U.K. and their grandchildren, along with
her own godchildren. Since then, she has toured around
Britain and travelled to Israel, Cyprus and Malta. Today,
Anne occupies herself with U3A, the theatre and her family.
She is now fully retired from medicine but, fortunately, can
still drive.
Nena Sedgwick Marsden
enjoys her home in
Sutton and remains active with the Georgina Pioneer Village
which she helped to found.
Marcia Lamont Scott
sends
her best wishes to the Class of 1943 and wishes you good
health and happiness for the year ahead.
CLASS OF 1936
Mary Ellis Cox
