CLASS REPS: Heather McPherson Ballon, Jean
Martin Lawrence and Margaret Fitch Szücs
The highlight of our year was, of course, our 65th Reunion,
celebrated by a luncheon at the B&R on St. Clair Avenue
West. Fifteen of the usual suspects attended:
Joan Atkin
Taylor, Elisabeth Marani Bacque, Heather McPherson
Ballon, Catherine (Cathy) Clark Cameron, Mary Uren
Dame, Jane Lamport Day, Marjorie Cowan Fish, Anne
Mackersy Hull, Mary Burbidge Helleiner, Jean Martin
Lawrence, Mary Southey McCarter, Margaret Fitch
Szücs, Adrianne Armour Taylor, Nancy Frankel Theimer
and
Margaret Ainslie Tuer
. MaryDame brought awonderful
photo album which prompted many reminiscences about
Whitney School, as well as Havergal. Unfortunately, the B&R
burned to the ground in a spectacular fire last February, so
there won’t be a fourth celebration there for us.
Joan (Kelly) Kalthoff Burt
lives in Creemore, while
Claire Applegath Keith Larsen
and her husband Trier
have moved to Florida permanently. Some of us now
live in seniors’ residences:
Mary Burbidge Helleiner
in
Halifax and
Marg Szücs
in Toronto. We are very proud that
Elisabeth Marani Bacque
is profiled in this issue on page
20 and we congratulate her on all of her artistic successes.
Margaret Norrie McCain
, who has six granddaughters
at Havergal, is working with the provincial Departments
of Education to extend preschool education downwards;
eventually to include children aged two to three. The intent
is to integrate learning and care. She is also working on a
project for Aboriginal education.
Mary Helleiner
and her
husband Chris went to South Africa last fall. Unfortunately,
Chris died in early September, so Mary delivered his paper
on wildflowers of South Africa to the Atlantic Rhododendron
and Horticultural Society.
Cathy Cameron
and
Mary McCarter
still take their
annual cruise, this year to the Caribbean. Some of us
continue to be able to pursue our long-term interests, as we
discovered when we reached the following people by phone
last year:
Daphne Gilbert Davidson, Pauline Mowat
Mengebier, Dorothy Holmes Mitchell, Elizabeth Ogden
Meyers
and
Patricia Travers
. Marg
Szücs has reluctantly
given up her volunteer work with the school archives
programme. Perhaps someone else in Toronto could help
for two or three hours a week during the school year? We
also urge you to donate to the Class of 1951 Endowment for
Archives. The income from this fund (approximately $2,500
last year) could pay for digitization of historic reunion
photographs or purchase acid-free photograph albums and
acid-free storage boxes.
Finally, we have lost two more classmates:
Sheila Amys
,
who gave generously of her time to so many organizations,
and
Wilma Kirkwood Westerhof
. Wilma was missing from
our records for a number of years, but was “found” when
Marg Szücs went to a noonday concert at St. Paul’s Church
and met Wilma helping out there. Wilma also volunteered at
Toronto General Hospital.
