CLASS REPS: Kathleen Bourke Bell and Christine
Coutts Clement
What an exciting year!
Alice Payne
received the 2016
Havergal Old Girls Life Achievement Award in recognition
of her role as “a trailblazer for women in the Canadian
resource industry.” At the annual dinner, Alice entertained
us with wonderful stories of life in the bush and the oil
patch. Her busy year included trips to Japan, Hawaii, Nova
Scotia, upstate New York and Ontario.
Virginia Evans Walker
was “totally seduced by Japan’s
beauty and cultural richness” during a trip that encouraged
participation in many cultural activities and rituals.
Following her 10th winter in San Miguel, a May trip to
Kashmir and Srinigar marked Virginia’s third visit to India.
Beverly Bruce Hargraft
’s expedition cruise to
Greenland and the Arctic highlighted her very busy travel
schedule, which included trips to France, Florida, British
Columbia, Quebec, Latvia, Estonia and Finland to watch
the World Figure Skating Championships.
Anita Krische

went to Spain and Portugal on a river cruise with Susan
Beveridge Spratt 1955 and this year, she and her sisters
are doing a tulip time cruise and on to Paris for a few
days. Her Ma is still going strong at 105.
Joan Graham Neely
welcomed her children Tam
(Whitehorse) and Greg (Sydney, Australia) and their
families home for a wonderful Christmas/New Year’s.
She keeps hoping that Greg will return to Canada, but the
University of Sydney has given him tenure and a raise. It
was fun watching grandchildren from opposite ends of
the world interacting.
Di Hume Ward
’s invention of a mobile accessible
washroom/change facility for special needs, the first
in North America, has been ordered and will be ready
for festivals and fairs in York Region this spring. It has
taken 1½ years to find sponsors. She continues her
weekly program with all ages and backgrounds getting
together to knit or crochet for charity, or just talk. There
are several teenagers, many kids as young as 6, and
sometimes, she is the oldest. Santa Claus participated
in a fundraiser that sold tickets to trim his beard. Di was
thrilled to accept the Hall of Distinction Award and now
she is hanging around the halls of Havergal.
