July 8th, the degree o f LL.D .
(honoris causa),
was conferred by the National University o f Ireland
on the President, Mr. Arthur Cox, M .A., LL.B .
Mr. Cox was introduced to the Chancellor and the
University by Dr. Michael Tierney, President,
University College, Dublin.
On Ju ly 16th, the degree o f LL .D
{honoris causa),
was conferred by the National University of Ireland
on Mr. John Horgan o f Cork. Mr. Horgan was
introduced to the Chancellor, and the University
by Professor H. St. J. Atkins o f University College,
Cork.

name o f Mr. David R. Pigot, Junior, who
served his apprenticeship with Mr. David R. Pigot,
21 Kildare Street, Dublin, was inadvertently omitted
from the list of apprentices admitted as solicitors
from ist August, 1951, to 31st July, 1952, printed
in the last issue o f the Society’s

has drawn attention to the fact that in
the Society’s

azette
for March, 1952, at Page
77, it was stated that Rule n , Part 1, Schedule I,
S.R.G.O., 1884, had been rescinded with effect
from ist January, 1951. This was a misprint for
1 st January, 1952, which was the date on which
the Solicitors’ Remuneration General Order, 1951,
came into operation. Any member who may have
been misled by the error is asked to note the correc
tion.
SOLICITORS’ GOLFING SOCIETY
A
very
successful outing was held at Portmarnock
on Thursday, 2nd October, in ideal weather con
ditions.
There was a large and representative
entry and the winners were as follows :—
Incorporated Law Society Cup with President’s
(Arthur Cox) Prize : D. M. Murphy (16) 1 up ;
Runner-up, M. T. Neary (8) all sq.
Ryan Cup with prize presented by the Society :
L. K . Branigan (15), 1 down.
At the Annual General Meeting held later that
evening, presided over by R. E. Felton, Captain,
followed by the Society’s- dinner at which Mr.
Arthur Cox, President of the Incorporated Law
Society, presided, tributes were paid to the support
accorded to the Society with particular reference
to the number o f competitors who had travelled
long distances to attend and support the function.
The Officers for the 1952-53 Season were elected
as follows :—
Captain, M. S. Matthews.
Hon. Treasurer, Joseph Barrett.
Secretary, L. K . Branigan.
Under the auspices o f the Southern Law Associa
tion a meeting was held at Litde Island, Cork on
Saturday, n th October. There was a very large
entry and competitors were favoured with ideal
weather conditions. This, coupled with the fact
that a course so noted for its golfing and scenic
qualities had been placed entirely at their disposal,
added very much to the enjoyment o f the parti
cipants. In the morning a 14 hole singles competition
on a stableford-stroke basis resulted in a win for
J. McCarroll (n ), Wicklow with a score o f 3
if.
The runnerup was J. B. Cottrell (20), Monkstown
with 30! (on last seven). C. Gore-Grimes (22),
Sutton, also had 30-|. In the afternoon a 4 ball
competition was played between teams representing
Ulster, Leinster and Munster and resulted in a
win for Munster with an aggregate o f 2 up against
Leinster 3 down and Ulster 4 down. The prize
for best individual card was won by D. P. Marrinan
(14), Belfast and G. J. O’Donnell (9), Ennis 2 up
(on draw). Runner-up prize went to J. Boston
(3), Belfast and W. Robinson (15), Belfast 2 up
(on draw). 2 up was also returned by D. P. Morris
(5), Portmarnock and H. J. Murphy (10), Bray and
by T. K . Keane (7), Youghal and B. J. Murphy
(17), Cork.
The visiting competitors were subsequently
entertained to dinner as guests o f the Southern
Law Association,- thus forming a very hospitable
and pleasant culmination to a most enjoyable
meeting. Many tributes to the hospitality of the
Southern members were paid by the visitors includ
ing Mr. M. S. Matthews, Captain o f the Society
on behalf o f Leinster and Mr. D. P. Marrinan,
President of the Belfast Solicitors’ Association on
behalf o f Ulster. Mr. C. J. Daly, President of
the Southern Law Association who presided at
the dinner replied suitably on behalf o f Munster
and expressed his appreciation o f all those who
by their attendance and other efforts had contributed
to make the meeting such an outstanding success.
It was felt that great credit was due to Mr. Joseph
Barrett as one o f the organisers from the Dublin
end and Mr. Frank Martin from the Belfast end.
